Alex Heveri’s Glass in Flight

March 1st, 2025 - Sept 1st, 2025
9:30am - 4:30pm

Exhibition opens Saturday, March 1, 2025

GLASS IN FLIGHT comes to Flamingo Gardens! This traveling exhibition includes 21 hand-fashioned, welded steel sculptures including butterflies, bees, dragonflies, beetles, and a bird! Designed specifically for outdoor display, the works are crafted from hand-cut and hand-faceted Dalle de Verre glass set into powder-coated steel frames. The Dalle de Verre glass is thick and durable and glows in sunlight with a beautiful intensity. Each sculpture was painstakingly conceived, designed, cut, assembled, and welded together by the artist ALEX HEVERI herself. Light filtering through the glass amplifies the saturated colors and iridescence of the insect wings, intensifying the illusion of movement and flight.

Currently on display: Alex Heveri created 10 miniature butterflies which have been scattered throughout the garden. See if you can find them all, then scan the QR code to enter to win one of your very own!

About the Artist: Tucson-based ALEX HEVERI has been an artist her entire life. Working her way through various media, she discovered sculpture as an undergraduate student at Arizona State University. During that time Alex experienced an installation of neon art and was mesmerized by the glowing and vibrantly colored light. Immediately following that encounter, Alex signed up for her first sculpture class where she began to learn welding and fell in love with the steel medium. After taking a break from art to focus on law school and establishing a successful career as a defense attorney, Alex participated in a Dalle de Verre workshop hosted by a local glass studio. She describes the moment she cut into her first piece of the thick Dalle de Verre slab of glass as electrifying. She now considers herself a light artist and uses steel and Dalle de Verre glass to create intensely powerful experiences of light and color. Alex applies an intensity of focus and a lot of discipline to her practices as both artist and attorney and her passion and love of her work is evident in the sculptures that make up the GLASS IN FLIGHT exhibition.
