Join us in the Flamingo Gardens Gallery as we celebrate 100 years on this beautiful land.
Follow a timeline of the key moments that shaped this remarkable place and discover how a commitment to caring for the land has grown into the legacy we know today as Flamingo Gardens.
On February 22, 1927, founder Floyd L. Wray planted the first tree at Flamingo Groves, beginning a remarkable chapter in South Florida’s history. Over the years, the groves expanded to nearly 2,000 acres, including a 20-acre citrus laboratory and a 12-acre botanical garden—one of the first in South Florida. From the very beginning, Floyd opened the groves and gardens to visitors, sharing the beauty and bounty of the land with the community.
When Floyd passed away in 1959, his widow, Jane Wray, established the Floyd L. Wray Memorial Foundation to ensure that 60 acres would remain protected. Her vision was to preserve the land, safeguard its natural beauty, and educate future generations about the Florida Everglades. Today, that commitment continues at Flamingo Gardens, where history, nature, conservation, and education come together to tell the story of this extraordinary place.
As our founder, Floyd L. Wray stated in 1939, “You are welcome to Flamingo [Gardens] and are invited to spend as much time as you desire, my only request being… that you help us preserve this beauty spot for others.”
